Often I use a Garmin GPS64S in a Garmin handlebar mount on my mtn bike. Over time the mount and the GPS battery door wear and no longer fit tightly together. Eventually I lost one GPS: it slid out of the mount unnoticed and disappeared at some point, likely during a bumpy part of the ride.
Convinced the wear was at fault, when I bought a replacement GPS, I also bought a new Garmin mount. A couple months later I lost the NEW GPS the exact same way. Naturally I started to suspect a dark Garmin conspiracy to increase GPS sales ... :^(
Use a shoelace to tie the GPS to mount so it can't slide out --- simple, eh?
First, you need a shoelace. I used a 32" lace, you can also make longer or shorter laces work.
Wrap the lace around the bottom of the mount a few times and let it hang with both ends on the same side.
Insert the GPS into the mount, then bring the front lace end up and clockwise around the GPS antenna. Run the front lace end back down and under the mount, to near the rear lace end. If necessary, slide/adjust the lace until both ends hang down roughly the same amount.
Tie the two lace ends together with your favorite knot. (I use a simple shoelace/bow knot.) The lace doesn't need to be extremely tight, just secure enough that the GPS can't slide forward enough to fall out of the mount. Remember that whatever knot you use will need to be untied to remove the GPS from the mount later.
I haven't lost another GPS since I started doing this!
